What is a Limited Use License?

Prior to Adobe Experience Manager, customers could purchase and use specific modules of Adobe LiveCycle which fulfilled their business needs. After AEM was rolled out by Adobe 4Point customers with smaller LiveCycle environments were able to migrate to a limited use AEM license at a heavily discounted rate. Adobe has stopped these limited use licenses and are requiring everyone to move to a full license of Adobe Experience Manager.

What are the new capabilities in Adobe Experience Manager?

Some of the key capabilities that other organizations are using in Adobe Experience Manager Forms are:

  • Replacing fillable PDFs with an online version, that works natively in a browser and on mobile devices, that still produces the filled PDF

  • Adding Digital Signatures (Adobe or other signature products) to PDFs to replace physical signatures

  • Using online forms to capture data and send it to core business system and avoid scanning or rekeying data from filled PDFs

  • Improving document output to support countries and languages dynamically to reduce the number of templates needed

  • Improving data integration to allow for document generation from a wider range of core systems

Why can’t Adobe sell us what we have?

Adobe no longer allows for limited use licenses and does not provide for feature separation. Adobe sells Adobe Experience Manager Forms as a whole product.

Your organization has been “grandfathered” in for many years and Adobe is adjusting this to remove these types of licenses for all customers.

We just want to keep using this specific piece.

4Point can work with you to determine if there are other product or technologies you can use to address your specific need.

However, there is no guarantee that these alternatives will perform the same as your current implementation and they may still be more expensive.

And for some use cases there may not be viable alternatives.

We don’t want to move to the cloud.

Adobe offers this license model for on premise and private cloud architectures. It is not required that you move to the cloud because of transaction-based licenses.

If this is the correct architecture for your use case, then 4Point will communicate this to Adobe and work with them and your organization to find the right license for you.

What are transactions?

Adobe has shifted all license sales to a model that is based on the annual count of two types of transactions: Submissions and Renditions.

Submissions are any forms – PDF, HTML or Adaptive Forms – that capture and submit data to any other system or store it in Adobe Experience Manager.

Renditions are any forms that are generated or created or updated inside Adobe Experience Manager for the purpose of PDF output, print output or fillable PDF (with no data submission).

The license pricing model uses the annual estimate for each of these types of transactions and calculates an annual price. Each year at the time of renewal, Adobe reviews the actual volume and adjusts the price for the next year based on the past and projected future usage.
